I have a fierce love for pop music. From my first Britney Spears CD to the pop divas of 2017, I’ve always been drawn to the infectious energy of contemporary pop. Unfortunately, as I passed the pre-teen Radio Disney days, it became less and less “cool” to be interested in this kind of music. Top 40 music is often considered a guilty pleasure amongst my friends and fellow musicians instead of a genuine source of inspiration and creativity.
The song that made me fall truly in love with contemporary pop was Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”. This song is truly the perfect pop song and it changed the way I thought about music. Musically and lyrically, it’s so simple yet it accomplishes so much in its three minutes. I was fortunate enough to score front row tickets to Katy’s California Dreams tour and loved every second of it. My teenage self was expecting to be surrounded by young girls and their unwilling parents, but it was actually one of the most diverse audiences I’ve ever seen. I belted out Teenage Dream alongside a group of fraternity brothers and super fan moms.
In both my songwriting life and life as a fan, there are few musical joys greater than stumbling across that perfect pop song. Sometimes they make me think with clever lyrics, give an emotional release to a hard day, or simply help me dance my face off at my cousin’s wedding. I’ve continued to explore and find true value in many genres, but pop music will always be my musical first love.
